Are Foreign Nationals covered?

The Lives Assured as well as the Beneficiary must all be South African citizens.

Can Changes be made to the Policy?

The Policyholder can make changes to the Policy. The application for changes must be done in writing on a form which Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd will provide. If Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd approves the changes, such changes will apply from the beginning of the month in which it is approved.

Can the First Deduction Date change?

Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd reserves the right to move the First Deduction Date to the same date of the following month should your premium not be paid on the original First Deduction Date. Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd will move the First Deduction Date a maximum of 1 (one) time, after which, if the first premium is still not paid, the Policy will be deemed as “not taken up” and you will not be entitled to any benefits from this Policy.

Does the Policy have a Cash Value?

No. The Policy is a whole of life Risk Policy only. No part of the Policy makes provision for investment. The Policy does not have a cash value, no loan can be made against the Policy and the Policy cannot be ceded. The Policy therefore has no surrender-, paid up- or loan value.

What are Children?

The Policyholder's own, unmarried Children, including legally adopted- and stepchildren under the age of 21 (or 26, if he/she is a full-time student). Children's cover stops on the last day of the month in which the Child turns 21 years old (or 26 years old, if he/she is a full-time student). Once the Child turns 21 years old (or 26 years old, if he/she is a full-time student), the Child can be added as an Extended Family Member. This must be done within 30 (thirty) days. Physically and mentally disabled Children will be covered indefinitely. A Stillborn Child is included under this definition provided that there is at least 21 (twenty-six) weeks of intra-uterine existence and that the foetus showed no life after complete birth. Stillborn shall exclude the intentional termination of the life of the Child. There shall be a maximum of 6 (six) Children insured under this Policy at any point in time.

What are the Child Benefits?

The Funeral Benefit Amount payable for a Child covered on the Family Option is:

Stillborn: 12,5% of the Policyholder Funeral Benefit Amount
Age 0 - 5: 25% of the Policyholder Funeral Benefit Amount
Age 6 - 13: 50% of the Policyholder Funeral Benefit Amount
Age 14+: 100% of the Policyholder Funeral Benefit Amount

The benefit amounts are subject to the Maximum Funeral Benefit Amount per Life Assured.

What are the Important Dates?

The Signature Date is the date on which the Policy Application is signed by the Policyholder. The Acceptance Date is the date on which the Policy Application is captured and accepted by Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd. The First Deduction Date is the date on which Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd will deduct and receive the first premium on your Policy (as specified on the Policy Application). The Re-instatement Date means the date on which a policy is re-instated after it has lapsed.

What are the References to Age?

All references to age will be the person's Age Last Birthday. Your age at entry will be your Age Last Birthday on Acceptance Date. The maximum age at entry for the Policyholder and Spouse is 64 (sixty-four) and for Extended Family Members it is 70 (seventy). Refer to "Children" for the maximum age of a child.

What are the Waiting Periods?

The Waiting Period is the period during which Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd will not pay a claim. All waiting periods start from the Acceptance Date. When a new Life Assured is added to the Policy, all Waiting Periods will apply to the new Life Assured. If you increase a benefit, Waiting Periods will also apply to the amount by which the Funeral Benefit Amount is increased. The premiums are payable during the Waiting Periods for the Benefits.

Natural Causes: 6 months

What is a New Born Child?

A New Born Child must be nominated in writing within 6 (six) months of the date of birth. If not nominated within 6 (six) months from birth, the waiting period will apply.

What is defined as Death Due To An Accident?

It means an unexpected death caused by a sudden, uncertain and fortuitous event which happens at an identifiable time and place, independent of any other cause. This does not include sickness or disease or any naturally occurring condition or degenerative process. Self-inflicted injuries and suicides are excluded from this definition. Accidental has a corresponding meaning.

What is Double Accidental Death Cover?

This benefit only applies to Funeral Benefit Amouont of R15 000 or less. If a Life Assured dies due to Accidental causes, an amount equal to double the Funeral Benefit Amount will be paid for a valid claim. The Double Accidental Death Cover applies to all Lives Assured except for Stillborn Children. The maximum Funeral Benefit Amount payable for Children will apply (please refer to the section relating to the maximum benefit amount per Life Assured).

What is Extended Family?

This refers to the other family members nominated by the Policyholder to be covered under this Policy and in whom the Policyholder has insurable interest. This will include the Policyholder's additional Spouse(s), married or adult Children, 2 (two) Parents, 2 (two) Parents-in-Law and other relatives. A maximum of up to 6 (six) Extended Family Members can be covered under this Policy. The Policyholder and Spouse must be married on the Acceptance Date of the Policy in order to enrol Parents-in-law for cover under this Policy. In the event that an Extended Family Member passes away, no further premiums will be payable for that Extended Family Member from the month following the date of the insured event.

What is Funeral Support Services and Repatriation?

By phoning Emerald-Life-On-Call at 0860 555 991, you will receive access to these support services for all the Lives Assured. These support services are automatically included in the product and are available immediately without any Waiting Period. The Waiting Periods only apply to the Funeral Benefit. The appointed service provider, FMS (the company managing the Emerald-Life-On-Call services), will perform these services. FMS is therefore responsible to perform the services with due care and proper workmanship. Except to the extent that FMS acted with gross negligence or fraudulent intent, Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd will not be liable for any loss, damage, cost, expenses or liabilities which you may suffer because of, or about, any services provided by the service provider.

The services provided by FMS include assistance with making a claim against the Policy, repatriation of the deceased, identification of credible undertakers and suppliers of flowers for the ceremony and the grave, and tombstones. They take care to meet special needs or cultural preferences regarding the transportation of the deceased and can also recommend certain funeral parlours known to them (if required). The benefit also includes accommodation for a maximum of one night for a relative accompanying the body to the place of burial, assistance and advice on claims procedures, legal assistance of interpretation of the will and management of necessary documentation, advice on obtaining a death certificate and cross-border documentation, and referral to a pathologist (if required).

If repatriation is required, and you elect to use your own service, the cost, that would have been incurred by the appointed service provider, will be paid to you as a monetary benefit. In order to prove that you made use of your own service provider, you need to submit an invoice from your own service provider to the appointed service provider by contacting them on the number stated above. If no invoice is submitted, no monetary benefit shall be payable. If the invoice from your own service provider is greater than the cost that would have been incurred by the appointed service provider, such additional cost will be for your own account. However, should the invoice from your own service providerbe less than the cost that would have been incurred by the appointed service provider, the additional monetary benefit will be paid to you.

What is the Airtime Benefit?

Upon the death of the Policyholder due to natural causes during the first 3 (three) months of the Policy, a R200 (two hundred Rand) Airtime Benefit will be paid. This benefit is payable to the beneficiary in order to assist with funeral arrangements and only applies to the Individual and Family Options.

What is the Funeral Cover Benefit Amount?

The Funeral Cover Benefit Amount is according to the selected cover amount from the different options, as well as the Terms and Conditions, as reflected on the brochure. The Funeral Cover Benefit Amount for Extended Family Members / Parents cannot be higher than the Funeral Cover Benefit Amount for the Policyholder, unless the Extended Family Member is covered on an Extended / Parent Stand-Alone Option, in which case the maximum Funeral Benefit Cover Amount is R30 000 (thirty thousand rand), depending on regulations.

What is the Immediate Family?

The Policyholder's Spouse and up to 6 (six) unmarried dependent Children.

What is the Life Assured?

All the Insured persons under this Policy. This refers to the Policyholder, the Immediate Family Members and the Extended Family Members under this Policy.

What is the Maximum Funeral Benefit Amount per Life Assured?

On ONE policy

* Life Assured over the age of 13 years: R30 000 (Thirty Thousand Rand)

Cumulatively on ALL policies

* Children up to the age of 5 years: R10 000 (Ten Thousand Rand)
* Children aged 6 – 13 years: R30 000 (Thirty Thousand Rand)
* Life Assured over the age of 13 years: R50 000 (Fifty Thousand Rand)

What is the Minimum Monthly Premium?

The minimum premium for all funeral plans is R80 (eighty rand) per month.

What is the Policy Contract Term?

The Contract Term of the Policy is 12 (twelve) months and will automatically be renewed unless Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd is informed in writing by the Policyholder not to renew this Policy. Upon renewal of the Policy, no new Waiting Period will apply.

What is the Policyholder?

This is the premium payer, the person who signs the application form and who also nominates other people who are to be insured under this Policy.

What is the Premium Payment Method?

Should an approved stop order be selected as a monthly collection method and for whatever reason not be successful, the collection method will default to a debit order, provided that you have authorised it on your application form. Alternatively, the monthly premium can be paid as cash at various retail distributors like PEP, Checkers, Shoprite, Spar, Ackermans, Boxer and Pick n Pay. By quoting your pay@ number at the pay point, you will be able to make the payment. What is the Spouse?

The person to whom the Policyholder is married, and which marriage is accepted under the law of South Africa - including civil, customary or same-sex marriages, or with whom the Policyholder lives in a relationship similar to a marriage, which relationship is intended to be permanent like a marriage and has existed for at least 2 (two) years. A maximum of 1 (one) Spouse may be nominated as Immediate Family. Additional Spouse(s) can be nominated as Extended Family Members.

When are Premiums paid?

Premiums are payable monthly. A premium received in a particular month provides cover for that month.

When does the Policy come to an End?

The Policyholder can give written notice of cancellation. A Policyholder has the right to cancel a policy within 31 (thirty-one) days after the receipt of the Policy Summary. This is known as the Cooling Off Period. Please notify Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd in writing of your cancellation. Any premium that has been paid within the Cooling Off Period will be refunded, and your Policy will be cancelled. (Please ensure that you retain a copy of this document.) If a cancellation notice reaches Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd after the Cooling Off Period, the Policy will end at the end of the month in which it is received and the Policyholder and the Insurer will be bound by the Terms and Conditions of the Policy until the Policy is cancelled. The Policy will come to an end when the insured event occurs and Emerald Life (Pty) Ltd has fulfilled all contractual duties under the terms and conditions of the Policy. A grace period of 31 (thirty-one) days is allowed for the payment of a missed premium. If payment of an outstanding premium is not made within the grace period, the Policy will lapse. The Insurer may also cancel this Policy by providing 31 (thirty-one) days' notice to the Policyholder at the last known recorded address on system.
